Onions makes the squad after taking career best figures of 11 wickets for 95 runs against Lancashire this week.
The England selectors will decide between him and Steven Finn for the place vacated by James Anderson who will be rested.
The match starts on Thursday and England have already won the series after winning the tests at Trent Bridge and Lords.
Onions was first called up by England in 2006 but did not make his debut until 2009.
He has not played in a test match for the national side since 2010 on the tour of South Africa.
