Geoff Cook Says Durham Lacking Confidence After Somerset Defeat

George Dockrell claimed his second six-wicket haul at Taunton this season to bowl Somerset to an unlikely three-day LV= County Championship win over Durham.

The 19-year-old Irish left-arm spinner took 6-29 as the visitors were shot out for 167 in their second innings, having conceded a first-innings deficit of 16.

Peter Trego extended his overnight score of 67 to 89 with some meaty blows before losing his middle stump to Jamie Harrison, who claimed 4-112 on his championship debut.

Dockrell and Jamie Overton scored the remaining 11 runs for maximum batting points and James Hildreth immediately declared, hoping his bowlers could take advantage of some rare cloud cover.

Jamie Overton responded by having Michael Di Venuto (26) caught in the slips with the total on 36, but there was no sign of the carnage to come as Durham progressed to 69-1.

Then three wickets fell without a run added as Craig Overton (2-25) added to his earlier half-century. Paul Collingwood and Ian Blackwell looked to be steadying the ship, only for four wickets to tumble with the total on 131, all to Dockrell, bowling from the River End.

The tall spinner soon made it six by having Harrison caught by Jos Buttler running in from cover, but his figures were not a season's best. He took 6-27 in the opening Championship game against Middlesex.

The hosts were left with a victory target of 152, with Arul Suppiah leading the way with 73 after losing opening partner Alex Barrow to the first ball of the chase.

Day Two

Peter Trego enjoyed a good day with ball and bat as Somerset ran up 357-8 on day two of their LV= County Championship match with Durham at Taunton.

First the all-rounder took his Championship wicket tally for the season to 26 by helping to clean up the Durham tail as the visitors were bowled out for 384 from an overnight 353-8.

Then Trego hit his first half-century of the season, sharing a seventh-wicket stand of 99 with 18-year-old Craig Overton, who hit 50 off just 54 balls, before finishing unbeaten on 67.

Somerset suffered a poor start in reply as Steve Harrison pinned Arul Suppiah lbw for four, but Alex Barrow and Compton were both unbeaten on 25 at lunch with the score 66-1.

Jos Buttler gave his wicket away with a flashing cut off Blackwell before he had scored, Mustard taking a routine catch, and when Craig Kieswetter fell lbw to Thorp for 42 Somerset were in trouble at 209-6.

By the close Somerset were 27 runs behind, with Trego having reined himself back responsibly. He had faced 112 balls and hit six fours and a six.

Day One

Will Smith hit Durham's first century in this year's LV= County Championship to help his county end day one against Somerset on 353-8.

The opener made an even 100, hitting 12 fours and a pair of sixes, as the visitors made the most of the chance to bat first after winning the toss at Taunton.

Michael Di Venuto contributed 96 in an opening stand of 158 against a Somerset attack without the services of Vernon Philander, who has been recalled by South Africa.

Alfonso Thomas - now back from the Indian Premier League - eventually made a breakthrough, getting Di Venuto caught behind by wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter.

Durham lost just one wicket in the afternoon, Mark Stoneman being run out for 27, but then suffered something of a collapse in the final session.

Smith departed to Jamie Overton to become the first of six wickets to go down for 85 runs. Ben Stokes made a fluent 60 before becoming the second run-out victim, while Peter Trego struck twice late on with the second new ball.
