DeAundre Cranston did most of the damage to the Eagles with 17 first half points to help the Rocks lead by 12 at half time.
The lead reached 16 at one point in the third quarter and the Eagles could only halve that deficit before the final buzzer.
Paul Gause top-scored for the Eagles with 24 points, with Joe Chapman just a point behind on 23.
Eagles' player-head coach Fab Flournoy told Sky Tyne and Wear: “We were flat and had no energy, we lost all the hustle plays and our number of rebounds was terrible.
“The second half was a different story but we just gave up too much to come back. Now we regroup and recover.”
Newcastle face second-placed Worcester Wolves in a top of the table match at Sport Central on Friday April 6, 2012.
